Dr James Manyika
James Manyika is a Director (senior partner) at McKinsey & Company and one of the leaders of their Global High Tech Media and Telecom Practice based in Silicon Valley. He leads the McKinsey Global Institute, the firm's business and economics research arm.

James serves on the Firm's global committee that reviews and elects directors (senior partners) of McKinsey & Company.
As Director at McKinsey, he is one of the leaders of McKinsey's Global High Tech Media and Telecom Practice, where he serves many of the world's leading communication, internet, software and systems companies on growth, innovation and strategy, and on organizational issues. As Director and leader of MGI, James has led research on areas including, growth, productivity, competitiveness, and technology and its impact on business and the economy. He has led collaborations with several executives and academics including at Oxford, MIT and UC Berkeley. James' work has appeared in journals, books and the op-ed pages of leading publications including the Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, the Economist, Les Echos, Washington Post, Forbes and McKinsey Quarterly. He has spoken at various international technology, business and policy forums and on radio and television. He published a book on distributed networks and decentralized decision theory and numerous academic papers.
Before McKinsey, James was on the Engineering Faculty at Oxford University and elected a Research Fellow at Balliol College, Oxford University. He was a Visiting Scientist at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and Faculty Exchange Fellow at MIT. A Rhodes Scholar and a Smith-Rippon Senior Scholar, James holds DPhil, MSc and MA degrees from Oxford in Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science, and a BSc in Electrical Engineering (first class) from the University of Zimbabwe.
He was appointed by the US Secretary of Commerce to serve on a 15-member Innovation Advisory Board to advise the Secretary and report to Congress on economic competitiveness and innovation, in conjunction with the National Economic Council and other federal bodies. James is a non-resident Senior Fellow of the Brookings Institution. He is a trustee of the Aspen Institute, the World Affairs Council of California, and SFJazz. He is on the advisory board of UC Berkeley's School of Information, an advisor to the Global Philanthropy Forum and has served on the Rhodes Scholarship Selection Committee for California. A native of Harare, James and his wife, Dr Sarah Manyika, and their son Julian live in San Francisco.
