Equality, Diversity & Inclusion

Equality, Diversity & Inclusion

Values and Goals of the OII

The Oxford Internet Institute is committed to enhancing diversity and promoting equality of opportunity amongst all our staff and students.  The OII:

  • Values a diverse department, and is actively working to increase our diversity and inclusivity of our practices.
  • Recognises that there are institutional inequalities and seeks to create fairer admissions and recruitment practices, as well as a more balanced curriculum.
  • Actively seeks feedback and input from members of the department about all EDI initiatives.
  • Is committed to transparency.
  • Reflects on our strengths and weaknesses.

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee

The OII’s EDI committee is an internal group that considers and advises on how the department should support a working culture in which equality and diversity is embraced and where appropriate focus is given to identifying, implementing and monitoring effective actions on diversity matters. It also serves as the department’s Athena Swan application project group and self-assessment team.

Gender Equality

The OII is a flexible workplace with a number of policies in place to support this:

  • We have core hours of 10am – 4pm (with no committee meetings scheduled outside these hours)
  • We support new ways of working and flexible working patterns
  • Understand and value all caring responsibilities
  • The OII seeks to maintain a positive and supportive working environment for its members and takes the well-being of all seriously.
  • The OII is committed to providing staff and students with an environment and a range of resources designed to support the achievement of a healthy work-life balance. We recognise that modern life places conflicting demands on everyone; this can be felt keenly by those with caring responsibilities. It subscribes wholeheartedly to the University’s Carers Support Policy. This makes clear that everybody has the right to apply for flexible working, for short-term unpaid leave, career breaks and can expect arrangements for emergency leave to be dealt with sympathetically.
Athena Swan Bronze Award

Athena Swan Bronze Award recipient

In 2022 the OII was awarded a Bronze Award in the Athena Swan Charter to promote gender equality in higher education. In order to achieve this, all areas of OII activity were reviewed to identify sources of inequality, along with ways of introducing more inclusive practices. In the five years to 2027 the OII will work to implement the action plan produced.

Anti-Racism

The OII is opposed to racism in all its forms, and recognises that we need to do more to actively promote our values. During 2020 students at the OII challenged the department to address concerns about how racism is addressed and dealt with in the department and across the University.

Accessibility

The OII welcomes students and staff with disabilities and makes necessary adjustments to facilitate study and work.

We recommend that students contact the Disability Advisory Service in the first instance to find out about support provided at the University of Oxford.

Countering Bullying & Harassment

The OII is dedicated to creating an environment where our staff and students feel safe. Mental health and wellbeing are a top priority. As such:

  • We do not tolerate any form of bullying or harassment. This includes the spread of malicious rumours, or the use of language whose purpose is to attack or demean individuals by reference to their personal characteristics. Our view is that sexist, homophobic, transphobic, or biphobic language, racial slurs, and religious stereotyping serve to create a hostile learning environment and are totally unacceptable.
  • A number of OII staff act as harassment advisers, as a first point of contact for students and staff to raise any concerns.
