
Maria Bakardjieva is an Assistant Professor of Communication and Culture at the University of Calgary. She completed her PhD in Communication (2000) at Simon Fraser University and a PhD in Sociology (1995) at the Institute of Sociology, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. She is principal investigator on a project focused on the Internet in households, and a project leader in the development of an Internet Research Studio experimenting with social applications of broadband and videoconferencing.
At the OII, Maria conducted an ethnographic study of the Internet as a communication medium in the societies of Central and Eastern Europe, focusing on intensive field work in Bulgaria.
