About

Dr Marcus Foth is a Senior Research Fellow with the Institute for Creative Industries and Innovation at Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Brisbane, Australia. Dr Foth is also the recipient of an Australian Postdoctoral Fellowship supported under the Australian Research Council’s Discovery funding scheme (DP0663854). Employing human-centered and participatory design methods, his research pioneers new development approaches towards interactive social networking systems informed by community, social, and urban studies.

Dr Foth has published over thirty articles in journals, edited books, and conference proceedings in the last three years, and is currently editing a book on Urban Informatics to be published by IGI Global in 2008. He received a PhD in digital media and urban sociology from QUT. He is a member of the Australian Computer Society and the Australian Interactive Media Industry Association.

As an OII Visiting Fellow, Dr Foth will study opportunities of internet technology to support social networks of urban residents in Mexico, South Africa, Australia, and the UK. The design of internet technology to facilitate social interaction in inner-city neighbourhoods is increasingly important for many countries. Mexico and South Africa are particularly prone to issues that stem from urban densification and a lack of adequate affordable housing. Governments look at information and communication technology to take on a mediating and facilitating role. This study brings together the expertise of researchers from four continents in a two year collaborative project under the leadership of Dr Foth. The team will select and examine local case studies to prepare an international comparison of community networking approaches.
