Technology and culture interact in multivarious ways, from the emerging discipline of digital humanities to the use of digital ledger technologies in the art sector. The questions posed by such interactions are not only academic but have deep practical implications.
OII researchers cover the full range of these questions. Projects such as Cabinet and reports such as ‘Libraries on the Front Line’ have asked how the internet and ICTs might be deployed to strengthen our cultural understanding, while other projects have considered the effects of digital resources in academia or asked how we should best understand the impact of cultural and heritage activities.
The emergence of AI image generation tools raises questions about their impact on creative professionals. This project seeks to work with professional photographers to explore the impact of this technology on their occupational legitimacy.
This project explores the process of creating new or altered content and sharing that via the web, often known as modding. In particular, it asks how modding changes the relationship between work and play in video games, and how AI is affecting this.
