Luciano Floridi – “Synthetic Non-Accruable Information”

Recorded:
9 Jul 2013

Professor Luciano Floridi discusses synthetic, non-accruable information at the American University College of Arts and Sciences. He begins by discussing ‘true information’ and the notion of knowledge as something that is synthetic, rather than analytic, and contingent. After a philosophical thought experiment, Floridi argues that instead of employing the traditional approach to ethics which analyses the agent that takes an action, philosophers should rather study the person who receives the action, in the manner of environmental and medical ethics. Floridi prefers the emphasis of the discourse to centre on what should be done to a person, instead of ‘what I should do’.
