About

Dr. Pu Yan is an Assistant Professor at Peking University, specializing in computational social science, digital media platforms, and the societal impacts of algorithms. Her work focuses on issues such as digital divides and algorithmic governance. She has published in leading journals, including Information, Communication & Society, and her forthcoming book, China’s Algorithmic Society: Digital Transformation and Everyday Life, examines how algorithms influence public discourse and daily life.

Before joining Peking University, Dr. Yan was a researcher at the Oxford Internet Institute, where she also earned her DPhil and MSc degrees. In addition to her research, she is committed to promoting public understanding of digital inequalities and advancing the ethical governance of algorithms. Her work pushes the boundaries of how technology shapes society, addressing topics ranging from misinformation and media trust to content recommendation systems and their everyday impacts.
