Although a great deal of my research applies critical discourse analysis, I also work at an interdisciplinary level collaborating with colleagues at universities in New Zealand and overseas. My current focus is on the social impact of the internet and the interface between language, technology and communication. I worked on the World Internet Project in New Zealand for a ten-year period from 2007 and was executive director of this research from 2014 – 2017. More recently I have investigated online news and comments, mobile learning in the classroom, people with disabilities and their internet use, digital divides and the use of social media in the Pacific. My research at OII investigated how the internet has disrupted the notion of free speech. An article discussing some of the outcomes of this research was published in The Conversation in March 2019.
