About

Michael is currently a PhD Candidate at New York University Abu Dhabi, and a Recognized Student at the OII. A computer scientist by training and a social scientist at heart, Michael conducts research at the intersection of computational social science and science policy. Methodologically, his research utilizes a broad array of quantitative methods, including applied machine learning, causal inference, and natural language processing. Substantively, his PhD thesis research focuses on the mechanisms by which inequality perpetuates within academia, particularly through the analysis of “big data” from scientific publications. He has published as the first author in highly impactful journals such as Nature Human Behaviour and PNAS, receiving media coverage from prestigious news outlets including Scientific American, the Times, Times Higher Education, Nature, and Science.
