Julian is a doctoral student at the Oxford Internet Institute interested in the future of work, particularly skill development and matching on online labour markets. Next to his DPhil, he is a research assistant for the CrowdLearn research project.
His doctoral project investigates matching between freelancers and employers on online labour markets. He explores how platform owners, freelancers and clients categorize and evaluate workers, their skills and available projects on these platforms in pursuit of successful matching, whose interests are privileged or ignored in the resultant classification systems, how these socio-technical infrastructures are ultimately used and potentially subverted by market participants, and to what effect.
Prior to joining the OII, he was employed as a consultant at McKinsey & Company where he predominantly worked with clients in the healthcare and transportation sector, as well as the McKinsey Global Institute. He is currently on educational leave to pursue his doctoral degree.
Julian holds a MSc in Economics from the Barcelona Graduate School of Economics and a BA in Philosophy, Politics & Economics from the University of Oxford. His research is supported by the Foundation of German Business.

This project explores how workers experience and respond to being classified by platform firms online.
Despite the rapid growth of online platform labour, little is known about how crowdworkers acquire and develop their skills. This project seeks to address this important gap in our knowledge.
