About

Cailean is a DPhil Candidate in Social Data Science, whose research interests concern the political economy of open source software (OSS) and the digital commons. His doctoral thesis focuses on why and how companies collaborate on the development of OSS, with a focus on the emergent field of open source artificial intelligence (AI). During the 2023-2024 academic year, he was a visiting researcher at the OSS Data Analytics Lab at Peking University.

Cailean’s DPhil research is funded by the Economic & Social Research Council. Alongside his DPhil, Cailean is a Researcher at the Linux Foundation; and prior to his DPhil, Cailean worked in AI policy as the International Policy Lead at the UK Government’s Centre for Data Ethics & Innovation. Beyond his research, Cailean is interested in public interest computing and learning languages.
