Professor Ian Brown delivers a keynote speech at the 2012 Indonesian Information Security Forum (IISF) on security and privacy in cyberspace from a European perspective. He reviews the actions of governments in the realm of national security (showing which EU countries make the largest amount of requests relative to population) and explains the legal framework regarding surveillance in Europe, which ensures that government powers regarding monitoring fight serious crime rather than monitor political opponents. Brown concludes by discussing how EU and US attitudes towards protecting privacy on social media differ radically–in Europe, in contrast to the US, citizens have privacy rights even outside the home or office.
