OII Professor Ian Brown discusses surveillance on a panel examining Internet monitoring for violent extremist material at the 2015 Computers, Privacy, and Data Protection conference. Brown considers in particular a paper published by the OII, which analyses the possibility of setting international standards for foreign intelligence collection. He laments the absence of significant legal reforms in the US and EU despite the public malaise about surveillance in the aftermath of the Snowden revelations. Brown concludes by recommending the implementation of privacy protections at the UN level.
