Women in Computing Professions: Will the Internet Make a Difference?

This event is organised by the OII Visiting Fellow Ursula Martin, Chair of the Women’s Committee of the ACM (Association for Computing Machinery), in collaboration with the British Computer Society and Association for Computing Machinery.

An exciting high-profile event in Oxford, England which aims to address the questions: How Can International Professional Organisations such as the ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) and BCS (British Computer Society) improve the prospects for women in computing and related Internet technologies and professions? Over the last decade, has the Internet made a difference in the prospects to women entering computing professions?

International professional organisations, like the ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) and BCS (British Computer Society), are uniquely placed to make a difference in matters relating to women and technology around the world. This comes about both through their international membership of computer professionals, students, educators, and academics, and through their activities such as accreditation and training of computer professionals, publications, conferences, student and professional chapters, competitions, prizes and awards, and participation in policy and government initiatives.

There is now tremendous activity worldwide by individuals, and national and international organisations. The outcome of the meeting will be an imaginative and robust position paper and action plan for professional organisations to do the best we can for the communities we serve, and the next generation.
