Facial recognition has made fundamental advances in recent years, but popular understanding of its capabilities lags behind the state of the art. While researchers have begun to make use of it in areas as diverse as anthropology and art history, there are few guidelines on the ethics of facial recognition in either research or the public sphere, nor is there a general understanding of what it can achieve. This paper will outline some of the uses and misuses of computer vision in current and recent practice.
