Through all our research and teaching activities, we seek to contribute to the public by generating a richer and deeper understanding of life online. This contribution would be impossible without the generosity of our institutional and individual supporters, as well as support from research councils and private sector organisations.
It is they who enable us to fulfil our potential and extend our work globally to meet the challenges of the digital future.
However with every success we aspire to go further. We need to expand our coverage of the most pressing digital social issues and we would like to add new resources in emerging areas where research is sorely needed. To achieve all this we need new friends and partners who share our vision and our drive to explore the internet from every angle.
We welcome partnerships to help us accelerate our research output in the areas where we are an indisputable pace-setter. We also welcome partners to support new work in important topics that are currently under-explored by scholars and practitioners, worldwide.
Our work is driven forward by talented Research Fellows who tackle their topics in full collaboration with OII colleagues. To deliver ground-breaking research, we seek support for early- and mid-career academics to join our teams exploring specific topics over delineated time periods.
Our graduate programmes are designed to train future leaders in academia, business and policymaking. Support for scholarships enables us to offer places to the brightest candidates and gives young scholars the means to fulfil their full academic potential during their time with us.
Our founding in 2001 wxas made possible by the benefaction of The Shirley Foundation. One of the UK’s first major IT entrepreneurs, with a deep personal and professional interest in the social and ethical questions raised by the Internet’s growth, Dame Stephanie recognized the opportunity for the University of Oxford to assume a position of global leadership in this significant field of research. Additional core funding was provided by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE).
