Ann-Sofie Axelsson is a lecturer and researcher in the Department of Technology Management and Economics at Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden. Axelsson has a multi-disciplinary background with an MA in religious science, literature, Nordic languages and journalism from Gothenburg University and University of Iceland. Ann-Sofie Axelsson earned her PhD in 2004 on social interaction in shared virtual environments, an area within which she has published extensively during recent years. She is the editor of the book, Avatars at Work and Play: Activities in Shared Virtual Environments (with Ralph Schroeder, 2006).
In 2001 Axelsson held an internship at Microsoft Research, Microsoft Corp., Redmond, WA, USA in the ‘Social Computing Group’ conducting a research project concerning social interaction in massively multi-player online games. The project resulted in several papers, a book chapter, and a technical report. In 2006 Axelsson held a position as a post-doc researcher at the Center for Collaborative Innovation, the Swedish School of Library and Information Science at Gothenburg University and University College of Boras where she conducted research on community knowledge environments (also called ‘collaboratories’) as support for researchers and communities of practice.
Dr Axelsson is currently on research leave from Chalmers University of Technology, benefiting from a short term stipend from the Swedish Foundation for International Cooperation in Research and Higher Education (STINT). As a Visiting Fellow at the OII she is engaged in researching ethical, legal and institutional dynamics of e-science in Sweden, a project in close relation to the Oxford e-Social Science (OeSS) Project.
