Introduction

In 2026, the Oxford Internet Institute marks its 25th anniversary. We warmly invite staff, students, alumni and guests to join us to celebrate this milestone at a programme of events throughout the year. Alongside these events, we will share perspectives from our alumni community, and recognise the influence of our research from the past quarter century.

Our history

Founded in 2001, the OII was one of the first centres in the world dedicated to studying the impacts of the internet on society. From the outset, we took a multidisciplinary approach, bringing together diverse perspectives to advance understanding of life online.

Since then, our work has evolved alongside a rapidly changing digital world. And today, our research and teaching explore the opportunities and challenges posed by transformative innovations such as AI, machine learning, digital platforms, and autonomous agents.
