About

Gus has worked at the intersection of technology and human rights for over twenty-five years.

His research and advocacy focus is on technology and data exploitation by companies and governments. Navigating both technology and policy, he has led work in national security and anti-terrorism policy, communications surveillance, border registration and tracking of migrants, travel profiling, and identity systems.

Across his career, he’s worked to strengthen civil society organisations around the world. Gus believes that informed and resilient non-governmental organisations working locally are the most sustainable and effective ways to protect rights globally. He also founded regional and international networks to work collaboratively on technology and rights; and helped govern various non-profits as a board member.

As Executive Director at Privacy International, he leads the registered charity as it works to achieve impact across the world through legal, tech, and policy advocacy; and supports partner organisations across the world to do similarly

Gus was previously a visiting senior fellow at the London School of Economics and Political Science, where he also taught for over a decade. At the LSE he led research and co-authored a book on identity systems, ‘Global Challenges for Identity Policy’ (Palgrave Macmillan).  He was a Visiting Scholar at the American Civil Liberties Union and an advisor to their Technology and Liberty Project.

He holds a B.Math (Hons) from the University of Waterloo and a PhD from the University of London on technology regulation.
