Time, Technology and Social Structure

A technology is a means of satisfying human wants. In the broadest sense of the word, it involves both production and consumption activities, but conventionally we focus on, and measure, just the production aspects of technologies.

In his talk, Professor Jonathan Gershuny looks at time diary surveys to provide a means of looking at the two complimentary aspects of technologies in a more evenly balanced way – and in doing so to develop a new approach to understanding social structure.
