The Future of Data Protection [European Internet Governance and Beyond]

Recorded:
1 Apr 2014

Professor Ian Brown discusses the future of EU data protection at the European Parliament. Brown comments that the European Parliament had arrived at a “reasonable” text for the EU Data Protection Regulation, but conveys concern about it passing the Council of Ministers, where the UK and Germany might delay progress. Brown concludes by arguing that national parliaments as well as the European Parliament should have a higher level of oversight over intelligence activities, but simultaneously acknowledges that most members of parliamentary select committees do not have the adequate level of technical expertise required for such oversight.
