(De)coding AI: Examining the impact of the lifecycle of algorithms

With Dr Ana Valdivia

Speakers:
With Dr Ana Valdivia

This workshop will explore the interactions and controversies of algorithms beyond the code.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has a wide political and environmental impact. In the last years academics, journalists and civil organisations have centred their efforts in analysing algorithmic discriminatory codes and bias; yet little is known about the impact of the whole lifecycle of AI: from mineral extractivism, to data infrastructures and electronic waste dumps. This workshop will explore the interactions and controversies of algorithms beyond the code: What are the labour conditions of workers that extract minerals used to build technological devices for coding algorithms? How is the infrastructure of AI impacting on local communities when it is not longer useful? Can we trace the logistics of AI? Is the decolonial theory relevant to better understand the whole lifecycle of AI? Bringing scholars, activists and journalists from different part of the Globe, we will contribute to global and local debates on the broaden impact of AI.
