Existing national employment statistics, which are vital for policy makers and researchers, capture almost nothing of the employment that is happening under the new rules of the online labour market. Vili Lehdonvirta explains how at the Oxford Internet Institute we are creating an Online Labour Index — a tool that measures the utilisation of these online labour markets in near realtime. It shows us how much work is being done, and what kinds of skills are being utilised. The Online Labour Index will allow policy makers and researchers to grasp the scale, speed and direction of change in different occupations. http://ilabour.oii.ox.ac.uk
