Matthew is studying part-time for a DPhil in Social Data Science. His primary research interests are in the application of mathematical and statistical techniques in order to define and further understand habits (formation, sustenance and breaking) and our relationship with online media (in particular mobile phones).
Alongside his research, he works full time for Automattic as a staff data scientist. Prior to this he has worked as a data scientist across a number of industries and company sizes, including at Spotify, Skyscanner, and The Hut Group. He holds an MSci in Natural Sciences from Durham University.
Additionally, Matthew has acted on the skills board for The Data Lab, has founded and run a company (receiving recognition from the Scottish Parliament) and was made an Honorary Fellow at Edinburgh University.
He lives in fairly rural North Yorkshire, having previously spent time living in Stockholm, Edinburgh and Birmingham.
