Alec is a doctoral candidate at the Oxford Internet Institute. His research revolves around evolving political communication tactics in the People’s Republic of China. In particular, he focusses on media convergence and digital culture powered propaganda upgrades under the rule of incumbent General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party, Xi Jinping. He holds a BA in China Studies from Leiden University, The Netherlands, as well as a MSc in Contemporary Chinese Studies from Oxford University. Prior to his Dphil, he worked as an political analyst in Beijing. His DPhil is generously funded by the Clarendon Fund and Balliol College.
