Luciano Floridi, the OII’s Professor of Philosophy and Ethics of Information, and Fellow of St Cross College, has been awarded this year’s Cátedras de Excelencia by the University Carlos III of Madrid (UC3M) in collaboration with Banco Santander, for his work on the philosophy and ethics of information. The prize (€60,000) serves to promote excellence in research, to attract outstanding and innovative researchers from the international university and research community, and to enable the awardees to carry out their research activities.

Professor Floridi said “This is an extraordinary honour and I’m deeply grateful to the University Carlos III de Madrid for such a prestigious award. I’m also very pleased to see that research in the new area of the philosophy of information is now acknowledged to be at the forefront of our intellectual endeavour.”

Luciano Floridi is best known for his foundational research on the philosophy of information and on information ethics; two new research areas he has helped to establish. His long-term project is a tetralogy on the foundations of the philosophy of information. His most recent books are: The Fourth Revolution – How the Infosphere is Reshaping Human Reality (OUP, 2014); The Ethics of Information (OUP, 2013, vol. II of the tetralogy); The Philosophy of Information (OUP, 2011, vol. I of the tetralogy); Information – A Very Short Introduction (OUP, 2010); and The Cambridge Handbook of Information and Computer Ethics (edited for CUP, 2010). Other research interests include the philosophy of technology, epistemology, philosophy of logic, and the history and philosophy of scepticism.

He will deliver the Cátedras de Excelencia Lecture during the academic year 2014-2015.
