The internet has radically transformed the problems faced by governments, as well as the tools available to them. From industrialised disinformation threatening elections to ‘digital democracy’ changing the way states see international relations, new technologies require a change to the way we see and study governments.
Our research considers the effects of these new technologies on governments and their activities, from the way authoritarian states use social media censorship to crack down on dissent to the opportunities for efficiency and improved service offered by e-government.

Digital technologies have changed the public arena, but there is little scholarly consensus about how they have done so. This book rethinks the workings and dysfunctions of the contemporary public arena, and considers ways to improve it.
This project seeks to review the Indian government’s policies relating to AI and Work, to improve understanding of how they are/can be (re)configured to account for and address the informality that characterises Indian urban labour markets.
In analyzing the public discourse around political figures, this project seeks to develop AI tools to identify claims that are fact-checkable and check worthy, which can be used to improve how governments are held accountable.
This project develops novel AI NLP tools to investigate how China is developing and strategically deploying AI and other tools for social control and online discourse manipulation.
This report provides an overview of whether African governments and regional bodies incorporate adequate consideration of gender in their discussions of AI and its potential role in economic development.
