About

Daniel Arubayi was a Postdoctoral Researcher at Fairwork, a global project based at the Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford. He completed his Ph.D. degree from the University of Manchester. Daniel also holds an MSc in Environment and Sustainable Development from University College London (UCL).

He has previously contributed to and is part of the International Network for Transport and Accessibility in Low-Income Communities (INTALInC), which examines the mobility needs of vulnerable urban populations in the Global South. He has also previously contributed to eradicating illiteracy in Nigeria as a teacher and an advisory board member through the SpellAfrica Initiative. He is also on the international advisory board for the Platform Work Inclusion Living Lab network (P-WILL), funded by the European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST).

 

His current research focuses on the impact of ride-hailing platforms on drivers and their everyday resistance against algorithmic management in Lagos, Nigeria. Daniel’s overarching research interests include but are not limited to, sustainable development, platform economy, platform urbanisms, algorithmic management, surveillance, and worker resistance.

As part of the Fairwork project, he coordinates the research in four African countries: Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, and Nigeria. He actively contributes to the research in the United Kingdom and cloudwork (i.e., global online platforms) within the project. He also leads the Middle East & Africa Regional discussions at Fairwork, including Egypt, Uganda, Lebanon, South Africa, Jordan, and Morocco.

Algorithmic Management, Gig Economy, Surveillance, Platform urbanisms, Sustainable Development, and Worker resistance.
