Funding for DPhil

Graduate students typically fund their studies from a variety of different sources, including savings or parental support, loans, scholarships or awards and employment. Prospective students should consider the information below when making their application as many scholarships or awards can only be applied for before study begins.

In order to apply for most major scholarship awards, prospective students must have submitted their application by the end of January. As the number of applicants is always greater than the number of available studentships, many of the most qualified students will not receive awards.

A comprehensive list of scholarships and awards for students is maintained by the University of Oxford Student Funding and International Office. Many colleges have awards, bursaries or scholarships for their students: these are usually open to Home, EU and Overseas students but may be subject limited. For further information please consult individual college websites.

OII Scholarships

The OII offers up to three DPhil scholarships each academic year, awarded on the basis of academic merit. The available sum may be awarded in its entirety to one student or split equally between two or three. These scholarships will principally cover student fees.

Action: All prospective students with a confirmed place on the OII's doctoral programme will be considered automatically, and need not apply.

Availability: This scholarship will be available for 2012/13. Eligible students will not normally hold other substantial awards.

OII Research Funds

Limited research funding is available to all our DPhil students to cover essential research expenses (eg conference attendence).

OII Hardship Funds

Limited funding may be available to assist students who face unexpected financial hardship during the course of their study.

Employment

Whilst many graduate students do undertake employment to fund their studies, please remember that the OII's DPhil Programme is a full-time course. There are employment opportunities within the University (such as teaching, translation, and research assistance) as well as within the OII. Many of the OII's existing DPhil students have been employed on a short or long-term basis as Research Assistants on grant-funded projects.
