Abstract

Thirty two years after the adoption of the first international instrument on personal data protection, the wave is now coming to Asia. Some countries in the region amended their old laws and came out with more comprehensive ones. Some started and developed from scratch. Others are in the midst of finalizing the law.

In this talk, Professor Munir will provide a comparative analysis on the data protection frameworks of Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Taiwan and the proposed law of Singapore. Before so doing, he will discuss briefly the international instruments and some recent developments, particularly in Asia.

Biographies

  • Professor Abu Bakar Munir, Faculty of Law, University of Malaya

    Abu Bakar Munir is a Professor of Law at the Faculty of Law, University of Malaya and an Associate Fellow at the University of Malaya Malaysian Centre of Regulatory Studies (UMCoRS). He was formerly the Dean of the Faculty and Advisor to the Government of Malaysia on Data Protection and responsible for developing the Malaysian Personal Data Protection Act 2010. His research interests are mainly on ICT Law and Data Protection Law. His publications include Cyberlaw: Policies and Challenges (1999), Privacy and Data Protection (2002), Internet Banking: Law and Practice (2004), Information and Communication Technology Law: State, Internet and Information (2010) and Personal Data Protection in Malaysia: Law and Practice (2010).
